Women in Print Exhibition - by Joyce
William Morris Gallery, Walthamstow, finishes 21st. June 2026
Jane and I went to this exhibition yesterday, an easy journey on the tube to the end of the Victoria line and then a 10/15 minute walk.
It traces the history of Liberty Fabrics over the past 150 years. In the early days women were often not acknowledged as the creative designers they were and were just a name.
There was an extensive display of the beautiful fabrics from the early days to more recent times with designs amongst others, from Susan Collier and Sarah Campbell. I remember Sarah coming to talk to us at Shirley Quilters, I bought a scarf!
The exhibition had over 100 items including garments, fabrics, original designs, film and historic photos. Jane and I remember buying Tana Lawn from Liberty’s in the days when we made our own clothes.
It was interesting to see how the designs often referenced designs in other areas, although there were a lot of florals there were also geometric designs and one by Sonia Delaunay, the French artist.
As usual food featured in our day out, coffee and cake when we arrived and then toasties after seeing the exhibition, both in the nice cafe at the gallery, with a veranda overlooking park.
Needless to say there was a shop too so we splashed the cash !
