Sarah Hibbert - by Viv
July‘s meeting started with Deirdre giving us our notices and highlighting quilt shows in Canterbury and Deal. Please check Kate’s roundup for more details.
Deidre asked that all exhibition forms could be handed in by the next meeting in August. It’s quite a tough job to get them all sorted so the sooner the better.
Happy birthday to Kate and Chrissie.
The evening then progressed to Sarah Hibbert's talk about her collage quilts. Sarah has been Quilting for 35 years. It all started in 1986 with a Dresden Plate cushion class which she did not finish. She talked to us about famous collage artists from Picasso to Blake. She says that making paper collages is her stress buster, which she does a little bit of every day. Everyone can create collage by cutting small pieces of paper from magazines and arranging them on a piece of card. Sarah finds inspiration in the everyday objects that are around her. And these are what inspires her to make her larger quilts.
Sarah's larger quilt making started with the hundred day project on Instagram where people load an item of their interest every day for 100 days. On day 57 she looked at one the paper collages she had been doing and thought that would make a lovely quilt. It was all curves and she’d never sewn curves before but now she finds they are her favourite things to do. Sarah‘s talk was very interesting and she’s a very amusing speaker. She has exhibited in America and has just published her book "From Collage to Quilt" which was for sale at the meeting.
Sarah‘s final message was everybody should have a go at making a collage quilt. It will be great fun and get us to let go of any of our preconceived ideas.
