Jane and I enjoyed this colourful exhibition yesterday (5th August).

Susan Collier and Sarah Campbell are sisters who grew up in a very creative home. They were encouraged to observe the natural world around them and to paint, from an early age.

They formed a partnership Collier Campbell, at a time when it was unusual for women to be involved in the world of design and manufacture and were able to retain control of the whole process of designing and printing their own cloth.

They designed fabrics and homeware for Libertys, Heals, Jaeger and Habitat.

As tastes changed they were able to adapt and so stayed very much in the forefront of the textile and homeware world.

When Susan died Sarah carried on her own creative journey and is still designing. She runs workshops at West Dean College and the Fashion and Textile Museum. Some members may remember her visit to Shirley Quilters within the last few years.

The exhibition is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 6pm and finishes 13.09.26.

There are plenty of cafes nearby.

The Material Heart, Front line to Home Front

There was also a poignant exhibition of pin-stuck cushions from before and during WW1, from two collections.  Made and sent by servicemen to their girlfriends, wives, and probably (considering how young many were) to their mothers.
