Lamport Hall Quilt and Sewing Show - by Jackie S

It isn’t a large exhibition, possibly more traders than quilts, but on Friday when my friend Lynne and I went it was very well attended. The quilts were displayed in a marquee in a large square area surrounded by the now redundant horse stables where all the traders were situated. Of course there was the obligatory cafe where we had a very nice scone and coffee after several hours making sure we had visited all the traders. Say no more!

The quilts were very diverse and represented six very different groups and individual quilters. “Connected by Thread” was a group of quilters who spent a weekend at a mansion in Snowdonia National Park Centre and as a result set themselves monthly challenges to produce a 9” square block on themes suggested by members of the group. A selection (9 pieces in each theme) of their work was on show and the themes I liked were Gustav Klimt, L S Lowry, Birds, Autumn, Spring.

Another interesting display was “Threads of Peru” - a collaboration between Maximo Laura, a renowned Peruvian tapestry weaver, and Rosalind Johansson, a textile artist based in Orkney. Rosalind creates quilts inspired by Maximo’s woven pieces, both styles being very colourful and full of texture. Although only a small amount of quilts were on display the different selection of styles, ideas and work was interesting and diverse.
