Janet Clare Workshop - by Carol

This was the first quilting day I had ever attended, I was really looking forward to it and I was not disappointed.

Janet demonstrated each component before we attempted to do it ourselves. Whilst I had tried free motion work before I did not realise you could write your name etc. From here we progressed onto drawing faces, followed by animals and bicycles!

Just before lunch we free motioned, (styled) a few houses, with extras like chimneys and windows. The art of sewing these pictures is to keep a continuous thread moving, not too fast and not too slow.

Later we practiced drawing a garden theme around the houses and used bonda Web and fabric to enhance the house. We then added doors windows and roof tiles on top.

Janet had brought several of her own quilts along, highlighting the written word. This new skill will enhance our ability to write our own notes on both the front and back of any future quilts.

After lunch and some purchasing of patterns and material, we made our own small applique pictures.

I asked a few participants for their comments on the day:

"Today took me out of my comfort zone and gave me the confidence to do it."

"A brilliant day, I really enjoyed it."

"A good, relaxed day."

"Amazingly easy and satisfying, detailed, but achievable."

"A good teacher."
